The Brisbane Tigers were down 18-8 to Mackay after 40 minutes in last Saturday’s Grand Final – the inaugural Harvey Norman U19s women’s Grand Final.
Cutters centre Jennifer Kimber had just scored her second of the day, burning her opposing centre off the scrum to put her side 10 points ahead.
In the next set, her teammate Leila Murphy suffered a broken leg and was taken from the field in an ambulance. The game was paused for an hour.
The Tigers were re-energised following the resumption of play.
The Cutters looked, understandably, shaken by the injury to their teammate. They made two errors and gave away two penalties and two set restarts in the lead-up to the Tigers’ third try, scored by winger Lily Neill.
The margin remained at six after Leilani Tuqiri missed her third conversion of the day.
A scrappy 10 minutes followed but the Tigers managed to get their fourth try, with Sarah Clark snatching a Kaylah Moloney offload to score out wide.
With about just over a minute left and down by two, the Tigers declined the shot at goal.
I can understand it. Tuqiri, already 0 from 3 on the day, was kicking at just 38% for the season. She misses and the game is over. They were dominant since the restart, they had time, they could get themselves back downfield into an attacking position from the kick-off.
They all almost did, getting to the Cutters’ 30-metre line. In what should’ve been the last play of regular time, Tuqiri put a bomb and hoped for the best. The Cutters dropped it, it was picked up in an offside position and the Tigers got a penalty right in front, 15 metres out.
Then this happened.
They tap it. They spread it. They get tackled. Mackay win.
Cutters’ hooker Paityne Johns was named Player of the Match.
Earlier in the day, in a much less insane game, Redcliffe defeated Townsville 24-10 in the U17 Cyril Connell Cup Grand Final, the first one held since 2016.
The Dolphins led 16-0 at halftime with tries to halfback Noah Fien (son of Nathan), hooker Amare Wynyard and forward Nate Berrigan (son of Barry).
The Blackhawks, who were undefeated heading into the final, got back into it after the break, scoring through Cowboys-contracted backrower Taakoi Benioni and centre Cohen Dittman, who ran the length of the field. Dittman started the year with the Roosters’ Harold Matthews side before returning to Townsville.
Inside the final 10 minutes, a dubious shoulder charge penalty right in front was converted by Dolphins’ winger Bond Bradley (great name) before Player of the Match Charlie Dickson crashed over two minutes later to seal the win.
A good year for Redcliffe’s junior rep sides, who also currently hold the Mal Meninga Cup title.
🏉 Jersey Flegg - Round 6
We had a full slate of Flegg games in Round 6 after the mass postponements the week before. Here’s what happened.
Manly 20 - 16 Warriors: The Warriors came close to their first win of 2024. Trailing by 10 after 50 minutes, they cut the lead to two inside the final 10 before making three errors and giving away a penalty, allowing Manly to ice the win late.
Wests Tigers 31 - 22 St George Illawarra: The Dragons led this 22-4 at halftime and looked set for their fourth straight win before the Tigers blew them away in the second half, scoring five unanswered tries.
South Sydney 20 - 20 Cronulla: The Rabbitohs salvaged a draw thanks to a last-minute Hayden Molkentien try and Brent Hawkins sideline conversion. Both sides were desperate for a win, the Sharks winless since Round 1 and Souths since Round 2.
Penrith 52 - 14 Kaiviti Silktails: Penrith ran wild in Fiji, scoring 10 tries in a 38-point flogging of the Silktails. The Silktails’ search for their first-ever win continues into Round 7.
Melbourne 24 - 12 Parramatta: The Storm made it three straight wins with a victory over the Eels at Crestwood Oval. The Eels are still winless but did score the try of the round.
Canterbury 38 - 12 Canberra: Canberra’s unbeaten run to start the season ended at the hands of the reigning premiers on Sunday. The Dogs were back to their best after the week off, scoring seven tries.
Newcastle 22 - 18 Sydney Roosters: The Knights bounced back from their Round 5 loss to the Dragons with a win at home, holding off the Roosters for their fourth win of the season.

🏉 City domination in U17s
The QRL held their annual under-17 City-Country fixtures this past weekend, moving them from the end of the season to before the Harvey Norman 19s and Cyril Connell Grand Finals. This of course meant several players weren’t able to play.
After losing both games last September, City were big winners on Saturday.
The City Girls opened the day with a 60-6 win, scoring 12 tries. Four of those were scored by Tigers’ front rower Lishainah Ulugia. Shalom Sauaso, contracted to the Broncos and plays for the Queensland Reds in the Super W, was unstoppable, scoring twice, running for 181 metres and breaking 18 (!) tackles. Halfback Lilianah Lewis was named Player of the Match. Pypah Ferguson, the younger sister of Jada, was Country’s best, running for 101 metres and making 17 tackles.
In the boys’ fixture, City won it 50-24. They led 22-18 at halftime before six second-half tries blew the score out. Souths Logan winger Siosaia Poese scored a hat trick. Hooker Sam Martin was named Player of the Match. Ipswich’s Xzavier Timoteo was a standout in a losing side, running for 128 metres.
Since 2021, the boys and girls series are both level at two wins each.
🏉 Four step up in Round 6
After a slow start, the NRL debuts have been rolling in in recent weeks, with four more - Jye Gray, Bailey Hayward, Lachlan Hubner and Chevy Stewart - debuting this past weekend.
Hayward was the first, coming off the bench for Canterbury in their loss to Melbourne on Friday night. The half made 23 tackles in his 38-minute stint. A local junior, Hayward originally progressed through the Roosters junior system, playing Harold Matthews and SG Ball for them before joining the Bulldogs in 2021. In 2022, he was named their Jersey Flegg Player of the Year and played two games for Scotland at the World Cup. He spent the entire 2023 season in the Dogs’ NSW Cup side.
Rockhampton through-and-through, Hubner ran for 77 metres in 30 minutes on debut for the Dolphins against the Broncos. A Norths Knights junior, Hubner progressed through every grade with the CQ Capras, from Cyril Connell to Queensland Cup. He made his NRL debut after 58 games for the Capras over four seasons.
Gray started at fullback for South Sydney in place of Latrell Mitchell in their loss to Cronulla. Despite going off for a HIA, he ran for 172 metres and broke seven tackles in his debut. A Runaway Bay junior, Gray was a star half coming through the QRL junior reps, playing for Burleigh and Souths Logan in the Mal Meninga Cup. In 2022, he represented Queensland U19 before being signed by Souths. In 2023, he started the year in SG Ball and ended it in Jersey Flegg, playing 11 games.
Stewart also debuted at fullback, playing 90 minutes in the Raiders’ Golden Point win over the Titans, running for 205 metres. A Kurnell junior, Stewart was a star for the Sharks’ Harold Matthews side in 2022, playing in their Grand Final loss to Wests and later being named an Australian Schoolboy. Joining Canberra in 2023, he quickly progressed from SG Ball to Flegg to NSW Cup in the space of two months.
